About

Welcome to Southern Protea.

This blog is where I share my life as a South African living in the United States. With rainbow nation roots and almost 20 years living in the red, white and blue, I am happy to share my stories, tips, tricks, and recipes that have made life here in the U.S. one full of love and laughter. I hope that you will join in with our little community and share your experience too!

I’m Nanette. I was born and raised in South Africa for 17 years, and now live in a suburb of Nashville in the States. Before Nashville there was a quick 10-year stint in sunny California during which I finished high school, went to college, met the love of my life (whom I eventually married), had my first baby and earned a Music Industry Studies degree. Now in Nashville, after having babies number two and three, I spend my days as wife and mom to my sweet family. I am constantly trying to find ways to teach them about my (our) South African culture and have to admit that it’s proven to be for my own benefit as much as for theirs! Even with all that has happened here, my life in the States is relatively new—seriously, I’ve met South Africans that have been here longer than I’ve been alive—and I’m still sort of muddling through all the craziness that is the American Dream. So now you get to come along on this journey with me and see all the glorious wins and epic fails as I navigate American life with South African roots.
