Apple Rooibos Iced Tea (From My Grandmother’s Table)

My grandmother was the ultimate hostess. Her recipes saturate my fondest memories, and the way she presented them was always pure perfection. These days, although she’s no longer with us, I try to channel her thought process whenever I’m planning an event — or even just an occasional “fancy” family dinner.

One of her signature summer staples has become my go-to for showers, garden parties, or backyard afternoons with neighbors: Apple Rooibos Iced Tea. It’s light, refreshing, and somehow makes people feel instantly special — especially when they hear it’s a family recipe, made with South African rooibos.

Tip: Feel free to swap the apple juice with another clear fruit juice like peach, cranberry, or pear for variety. It’s a winner no matter how you mix it.

A Personal Note About Ouma

To my Afrikaans readers — and to anyone who’s loved and lost someone truly remarkable — I wanted to share this piece I wrote for my grandmother’s memorial service. I hope it gives you a small glimpse into the kind of woman she was, and honors her memory in the way I know she’d have loved — around a table, with something delicious to sip.

Een van my eerste herinneringe van my Ouma was in haar tuin.
